SELF PORTRAITS
From the dawn of art, the self-portrait has persisted as a subject of fascination. As an artist, I too, have undertaken the task of capturing a glimpse of myself...
Yet, as is often the case with creative endeavors, my initial attempts fell short of my expectations. Undeterred, I persisted and explored various approaches.
The sculpture. This was the first attempt to capture myself ever in a realistic way. It was tricky and during the time I was doing it I wished to be anywhere else, but now I am glad I did it. It may be simplified, but the more i look at it, the more I see myself.
The painting. Done during the lockdown, I was tired of feeling ‘blue’. So I used green instead. It was a nice change of pace to focus on the values and tones of one color. Because I wanted to be anywhere else, I decided to use as a background Edward Hoppers ‘Rooms by the Sea’
The instant. I’ve always been plagued by finding my own inner self. What if all I know is a lie? What if I am not who I believe to be? So many what ifs were silenced when I did this painting. I realized that who and what I am is just a collective of thoughts and actions and I get to decide what to act on. Using so many geometrical forms felt right, as at that time I felt fractured. Sometimes it takes more time to glue yourself together.
