Has anyone ever wondered how it is to collaborate on an art project with something non-human? I’ve had the pleasure to work on Nexus with a slime mold – neither plant or animal, just a unicellular creature thing that lives in forests (and sometimes dutch art schools).
My goal was to grow the slime mold as much as I could, and then create a zine based on the choices the slime mold made. To ‘communicate’ with it, I placed the food (oat flakes) in 3 different areas of the petri dish. Based on what oat it went to first, I could determine the direction of the zine.
This zine turned out to be all about connections: how we are all connected with each other and the things around us.
I did enjoy working collaboratively on this zine with something other than human. It opens up new possibilities for my projects & it makes me think differently about how to approach collaborations.
