BREAK THE CUBE

Based around the square kilometor around the Blijdorp Metro area, I created the 'Break the Cube!' series. This was inspired by my first impressions and my feelings as I discovered the area, step by step.

Blijdorp Metro is  very straightforward area: it's all about the sharp lines and repeated windows and buildings that look the same, giving the impression of an infinite Labyrinth. It felt that there is no human connection in the area – there is no proof of how the people in this area are living.

Taking the shape of the buildings I simplified it into a cube and I decided to break it. At first I didn't know how to break it but then it came to me that maybe I can add the human element that I was missing when I was walking in the area in the first place.

Now this ‘breaking the cube’ meant that I could break it with imperfections or organic shapes. Going back to my area, I started taking notes of what I saw mostly in the windows in a way to connect with the people that we're living there. What I usually saw were bookends, lamps, vases, mirrors and that's why one of the first ideas for the family of objects was actually having a lamp, a vase and the bookend.
